Why does the 3630 suck so bad?

Didn't Tape Op run an article about 3630 problems and DIY fixes? There was a simple mod involving swapping out a pair of resistors and a pair of capacitors, as I recall. There are some guys who sell 3630 mod kits for the price of the unit. Here's one link: Black Lion 3630 mod
