surround mixing

besides a set of surround monitors, how would i mix master something in surround. (5.1) any suggestions for software, and do i need a surround amp, or powered surround monitors?

i want to mix stuff i already have on my comp

Logic Audio 5.8 and up will do it

You'll need the software (Logic, WaveLab 5, etc.), the hardware (at least 6 outputs) 5 matching monitors with matching amps & a subwoofer properly calibrated to the rest of the monitors, and a properly tuned room.

Yeah they would have to be, they each have discrete signals.

I'm putting in a 2.1 system (LR plus mono rear & sub) and then developing a tool to translate to 5.1, but that's definitely less than desirable. However in my tiny studio I seriously doubt I can independently image 5 channels, so that's the route I went. It will be fun to play with. For the rear speaker I went with a full range Fostex driver in a little cube cabinet rather than an all-out two-way monitor, which saved a bit.

In my greatest eBay score ever I got a Miles Tech 6 channel power amp for less than $300. I'd never heard of them before, but I nearly wet my pants when I opened the case and saw the giant caps and transformer. It retails for $1100
