help with recordings!!! (Cool Edit Pro 2)

I've been using Cool Edit Pro 2 for a while now and i've learned the basics. But still when i record my songs i don't get that perfect "sound" on my voice.. I usually record and do a mixdown (Newb). Everyone uses effects and such things, but i don't know how to do that. I read manuals but i still don't know. I have a conden. mic and a Preamp so the sound should be good.

So i wonder if ya'll can share your experiences of when you record, and what you do when you record (step by step) and what you do after recording (mixdown and in multitrack). I record accapellas, do a mixdown and save. I don't know when you use the effects (is it on the multitrack or in the mixdown?). And what effects and settings (presets for an example). I would appreciate if you answered because i've been trying for a month soon, it's killing me.

Thanks in advance

The best way for you to get some good feedback is by maybe posting an example of your audio somewhere and giving us the link. Then we can listen to it and get back to you.
As far as when to do effects...generally you record your tracks, mix everything by adding reverb, compression, etc., decide on all your levels, and then when everything sounds perfect to you, you mix it down. Only mix down when you got the exact sound you want.
