Skipping with Tascam US-122

I've been having a problem with my tascam us 122. I use Adobe Audition and/or Cool Edit Pro 2.0. When I started recording i would get constant skipping and some clicks and pops. I installed the win xp service pack 1 and it seemed to have fixed it, but i still get ocassional skipping and clicks/pops. My pc is a P4 1.6ghz, 512 ram, 80GB. This is driving me nuts, i need help.
