Live Drum Sound.

Um, I have a question. My band does alot of outdoor shows, and I would like to know a method of tuning my drums so I can that Live sound that you can hear from pretty far away rather than hitting the drum and then in 2 sec, the sound is stopped instantly. Any ideas would be very helpful.
