Angry Recording guitar with Sonar and US 122

Im a newbie at this recording situation, I bought a TASCAM US122 and am using a laptop with SONAR producer 3.1 on it

I have successfully recorded mic input from a shure sm58/57 with this setup but im not sure exactly what I need to be doing to get the guitar to record

I tried plugging the opposite end of the cable from my electric guitar into the Guitar/line in jack on the tascam with the switch set to guitar but it doesnt seem to be detecting anything.

IM NOT SURE WHAT TO DO,.... i have the bad case of I HATE THE COMPUTER shit but I want to do this so could someone help an idiot like me to figure this thing out

I have a fender amp but i cant see how that factors into the equasion here

????

help!!!
