cooledit
I can't get anyone at the cooledit forum to respond to this question from a friend who uses cooledit. Fellow fostechers, can you suggest how this friend can control his levels if he is going from the mike thru a mixer (no, I don't know if it has preamp) and directly into a soundcard and then on to cool edit? Thanks. Now here's the inquiry:
"I need help with adjusting levels. My guitar (and me) go through a condenser mic into a mixer and into either the line-in or the mic plug in on my computer. I have a very normal soundcard. I get good results but I need to know what I'm doing more. My question is this: How do I adjust the volumes on a) The mixer, b) The computer's line in or mic control, such that I can get the best possible quality? I use cool edit pro. also, is it better to use the line-in, or the mic?" I think he knows by now not to use the mic input on his soundcard. Seems to me he needs a preamp to control the signal. What do you think?

Some sound cards have a control panel applet that gives finer control over levels on the card - that might be something to look at. What kind of card is he using?

levels
set levels at mixer to unity, get proper gain structure, then adjust recording input of soundcard to just below clipping
