424 mkII

I'm just getting into recording and I took a chance and bought a used Tascam 424 mkII on ebay. It claimed to have worked in the auction but when I got it, it didn't. Does anybody have an idea of what could cause this? There's no power when I push the power button. Is there anything I could possibly repair myself?

424

the 424 uses a voltage reducer, the black box in the power cord. It might be dead. If not its an internal power problem. I own one but have never had it opened up.

How could I check and/or get a new voltage reducer? Is that something I could get at an electronics store or would I need to contact Tascam?

424

First of all make sure it's properly plugged in...second make sure the end that goes into the 424 is properly plugged in...if still no power you can check the pwr supply with a multi meter...If you can't do that...take it to a Tech and have it checked out. Power supplies are available from Tascam;

Operational Support team at (323) 727-7617 from Monday through Friday, 8am-5pm Pacific Time.

Don't despair...It's probably nuthin big....The 424MKIII is a great machine...I use mine all the time

Arrow The 424mkII power supply is internal, with cord attached.

Sorry, all you guys who were pointing to the "module". It's not one of those.

Your options are limited, my friend, but this will likely need a service technician. There are no fuses internal to the unit, that I remember. This is NOT an external power supply unit, or "wall wart".

Your best recourse might be with the seller, and/or claiming a charge back on Paypal or your credit card, (if used). Was it sold "as is"?

How was the condition of the box? Did it appear to have been dropped? There are a lot of variables, but a "power supply from Radio Shack" isn't one of them.

That's a 424mkII, right? Not a type-error? The MkII has an internal power supply, with cord attached.

Tascam Service is in Montebello, CA, and that's the best thing I can recommend. Chances are, it will be a simple fix, costing probably about $100. Sorry for that news, but you may have recourse with the seller, and/or a charge-back.

Sorry to repeat myself. That's my post. Good luck.

thanks

First I'd like to thank everyone for helping me out. The auction for the mkII said that it was new in '98 and it was still in perfect working order. It came with the manual but no box. I'm still trying to contact the seller (he won't respond) but I guess I'll just find a repair tech or contact Tascam. Thanks again.
