Improving latency on Us-122/224/428 series

Howdy.

I've been trying in different ways to improve latency with these creatures. I've got the 428 and the 122, and thinking of getting the 224 as a portable solution that i don't have to plug=in.

But i don;'t understand why tascam give a minumum of 256 samples when most other manufacturers of USB devices gave down to 64.

I've tried using asio4all, and managed to get the output down to 4.8ms, without any crackles, but this asio driver alternative doesn't give any input signal with the tascam. Another project called ASIOto USB hasn't covered the tascam units yet (they talk about the possibility in the future)

Does ANYONE know of an alternative driver that works? Or when tascm will be releasing a better more versatile drive for those of us with faster machines? It would be nice to be able to run thru a guitar software fx & not be thrown by the 28ms of latency (BTW whats with the 8ms input & 24ms output in cubase SX ? 8ms i can understand, but 24ms 4 the output???)

I really like the controller surface, which is why im staying away from the other alternatives... if anyones found a better alternative, for a laptop, that doesn't need to be externally powered, that has fantastic latency, i'd love to know bout it too!

Thanks!

anteck,
what make of laptop you using? What OS do you have? I have a 224 that I use to input into Ableton Live through a 1.25 ghz Apple Powerbook with zero latency. I just recorded a piece last night with vocal, bass and guitar. I had some latency issues with an old Yamaha synth module going through the analog inputs but that went away when I ran it through the midi ports. (I won't claim to understand why,it just did) I'm sorry I just looked at my 224 control panel and it reports a 1ms audio safety buffer. (sigh) I also run it in 424 emulation mode, but that shouldn't really matter. You might check your audio settings for your OS to see if there is any tweaks you can do, and check for any software updates for both system and your recording program (cubase?) There is no reason I can see that you should have more than 8ms of latency in any case. This probably didn't help much but hopefully may have given you some ideas.
J.

Thanks.... but...

Hey, thanks for the input, but there is nothing i can do bout the latency. I use a PC, with Cubase, the minimum u can get down to is 256 samples.. Mac users are lucky, they get down to 128...

I've decided to sell the US-122 & go for a completely diff angle, a novation X-Station, which has low latency, FX, Synth + Complex Midi Controller, all in one, powered off USB. Should satisy my virtual synth cravings... Just gotta wait for the guys in ireland to finish making them...

If the latency is bothering you its not the equip its your pc because I run the 428 into my pc Compaq Presario 5005sr its about 3 years old and I have no problem with it. The problem might be the software that you are using with it because I had a problem with software until I changed it

are most of you guys running your recorded tracks into software FX during tracking?

how is the latency? are you having problems similar to Anteck?

I never listen with effects as I record. I always direct monitor the track I'm recording while listening to the playback of the other tracks.

Crossstudio, I don't add the effects until after tracking on mine and I never have a problem

You should try installing service pack 1 for XP (assuming you have win xp). That fixed the problem for me, i don't know why, but it did.
