Joemeek VC6 vs new 3Q

I can purchase a used VC6 for $175.00 or I can get a new Joemeek 3Q for $199.00. Which unit would I be better off with. They both have the same functions like comp and Eq. Also, is the Joemeek good on female vocalist?

i got a Joemeek VC8 Fathead

actually its a guitar preamp, but i use it for a lot of stuff,

the compression, yeah, i really love it, in my opinion it sounds alot better than my TC Electronic Triple C....
but it just sounds different, its warm and vintage, nice quality,
the Eq is fine too, definately better than on all my mixing descs..

i'm also looking out for a Joemeek stereo EQ,
or something like a stereo Preamp,
but don't know which one it best suited for me ..

so all i can tell you is....you won't be disappointed in that joemeek gear,
it has its own special sound, but i like it, and lots of others do too.

Wink

If you have the time/inclination get the VC6 for $175 then flip it on ebay,
make a few $$-then get the 3Q.

The pre on the 3Q is clearly better than the VC6, and if you push the compression on the VC6 beyond a certain point it starts "clamping".
Plus the circuitry is quieter too on the new Meeks.

You may also want to check into the upcoming sixQ, it has some cool additional features over the 3Q. Expect it to street around $350 BTW.

Question

Is the 3Q a half-rack box? It's not a full rack width, right? It's also not a pc bay sized box either, is it?

The older VC6 has the old SSM2017 mic amp, 3 band EQ with mid band sweep, compressor, and a 1/4" DI on the front. It was very noisey, but sounded cool.

The new threeQ has a Burr Brown front end, 3 band EQ with mid band sweep, compressor that does much more and is much faster, switchable outputs at +4/-10, has no noise, and you can use the line input in the back as a 1/4" DI.

The new sixQ is some 90 days out, so if you can wait, and spend $350.00, then the new sixQ is the way to go as you get even more features 3 band EQ with mid band sweep, LF sweep, and HF between two frequencies. Plus digital out, gain make up, DI, more metering and switchable transformer mic pre.

If the decision is the old VC6, or the new threeQ, I can tell you the threeQ is a much better unit. IMHO... So I would get the threeQ based on those two units. Just call me to give you some pointers about the new compressor as it works differently than the old one, and a little goes a long way...

Say Alan, any word yet on what a VC6Q will bring in trade for the new version?

I remember hearing that PMI would look into that to keep a handy supply of parts for the older versions.

Hey C7,

Not yet. Each trade will be different depending on the condition of the unit. We just started shipping the threeQ's, so there was some inital limited quantities. Once we get our bulk stock, I will start the threeQ trade in.

Same with all the other models as soon as there is good stocks out there. The new sixQ is very impressive IMHO!
