are there any decent DISTORTION units out there ?

well,
i played on a digitech rp 6 (or something)
a zoom player 3000
some cheap distortion pedals

and now i got a joemeek vc8 fathead with optical distortion

but i haven't found what i want yet,,,
the digitech had some fat distortions, but was very noizy

so is there anything out there in 19" rack format ?
and in my expierience, most of those small gut-pedals aren't of high quality

i'd like to use the distortion for vocals, fx, and well yes, guitars

i'm not so keen on those big pedalboards like the ZOOM or the DIGITECH,
i love rackshit

so, any suggestions ?

thanx,
earworm

Thermionic Culture's "Culture Vulture" is a real bear!!! Best distortion unit I have ever used.

I heard that was killer.
Try the Sansamp rackmount deal... its kinda pricey new, but can be had around $350 used I think. It sounds real good. If not, try the sansamp modeling pedals. They sound very good for the money.
The Mesa recording preamp sounds damn fine.

I love my rat

I love my old Rat distortion. Distortion like most things is a matter of taste.

The Tube Screamer is a classic but a good tube amp will usually give you the best distortion.

well,
little pedals are fine, but i'm looking for something that can be tweaked...

those TECH 21 sansamp AMP-SIMULATORS might be kinda what i'm looking for,
and the thing has presets if i'm right, so even more stuff to play with

and what about software ? i've only used PURE JUNK distortions...

If you want rackmount check out the rocktron gainiac.

Though I think a lot of pedals sound great.
Klon centaur for creamy smooth OD
Boss Metal Zone- lo eq, hi eq, sweepable mid. Many different sounds.
Original Rat- not turbo rat. The sweep filter is killer
Beyond lo, mid, and hi, and gain, there isn't a lot to tweak with distortion.

I know you're looking for a rack unit, but have you tried Izoptope's Trash.
I think you can d'load a demo to see what you think... I hear it's about the best distortion plugin you can get.

I don't use it , but their other products are real good....

I use a Mesa Quad pre for distortion on my guitar.... (ebay ~ 500 now...)

I second the rocktron vote. I don't remembe the exact model, but a friend of mine had a rocktron preamp that rocked. It was red on the front, if that helps.

Of course you could always get a Marshall JMP100, but I don't care for them much. Also there is the POD Pro.
