Can N-Tracks do this?

I have a Fostex MR-8 and use it primarily as a practice tool, recording a couple guitar parts, some bass, and the like. I am interested in taking the wave tracks to PC and using an editor like N-Tracks to step it up a bit with more effects options and mixing.

the next step is to use the recorder and editor to trade parts back and forth with a friend. I'd like to be able to record us individually or together, by track and then give him my part and backing parts for him to practice and play around with; and retain his part and backing part for me to do the same.

So what i am wondering (from a very little experience with cakewalk demos and the like) is how easy is it to sync and coordinate different tracks that might be recorded seperately from the original? This might not be clear, let me give an example:

Dave records a guitar part and bass part and puts them in N-track.

Later we record another guitar part by Bill and Bill's vocal track. These also go into N-track.

At different times, one or the other of us might add a new track or replace one of the others.

Can we just share the individual waves from any given track(s) and slot them in withthe others?

If i were monitoring the semi-mixed parts through the PC, and then recorded a stand alone track on the MR-8, could I then expect to be able to take my new track and add it to the others in N-track so they are sync'd for tempo and the like?

I hope the explains what I am trying to figure out. Similiarly, if anyone has any experiences of colaborating from (somewhat) afar by exchanging wav files recorded as tracks they can share for me?

No problems flying in parts from different sessions (obviously playing in tune and in time will help...)

Using the tempo/meter maps on MR-8 will help keep everything straight.

Probably better suited to the fostex forum, but if you are playing to a set tempo, the map lets you think in terms of bars and beats, which will help everything line up in n-Track.

(Although I've done stuff like recording an 8 bar guitar solo in the middle of a tune and dropping that small wav into n-Track and manually lining it up with the backing - by moving it forward just a bit in time it had this urgent feel, almost like someone good was playing!)

I think you'll happy with n-Track in conjunction with your MR-8 - it's a pretty popular combination.

To reply to the part of your question about exchanging wav files between different collaborators, I do this now, though not with N-Tracks. I record tracks on my MR-8 and bring them into Pro Tools Free on my Mac. I then send them to a friend who is using Cubase on a PC to add bass and drums and to mix and master. It works well, so it should work with N-Tracks too. The only problem is that wav files are too big to email. We use FTP (File Tranfer Protocol) over DSL or high-speed cable, which is fast enough to transfer the large files at a decent speed.
