I'm gonna make my own pop-filter. I found a place that sells those cross-stitching hoops that you can use as a frame for the pop-filter.

About how big (diameter) should the frame be?

I'd go for 5- 6 inches. You might need to double the hose too. One thing that I haven't figured out is how to attach it efficiently to the mic stand- it usually involves a lot of duct tape and wire- not pretty.

I bought a pop shield and found I didn't like the audible effect of air whistling through a screen. It took care of the pop alright. I found that training myself how to properly manipulate the mic as was suggested on one of these threads was good advice. My two cents worth.

Don't need a frame..

I use a coat hanger bent into circle with pantyhose.. works ok...

Again hard to adapt to a mic stand but as james says, duct tape.

Question

Whatcha need is some sort of gooseneck with a clamp on each end - I've asked around, but nobody knows where something like this is buyable or makeable.

I'm also going the homeade pop filter route. I also bought the stitching hop. I bought a $1 clamp at the hardware store. My latest idea is to get one of those flexible plastic pipes, used for plumbing, to attach the hoop and clamp to. I haven't secured it yet, but I think that it will work, because the tube is bendable but fairly rigid.

Lambo: Yes, I try my best to use the mic in such way that the p's don't sound too explosive, but the problem is that sometimes I get ppl in here who have very poor mic technique, (ie. can't stay in the same place for more than half the song, extremely explosive p's, not backing away from the mic for loud parts, etc.) so I've decided to go with the pop filter for extreme cases.

I haven't needed duct tape yet. I wrapped the coat hanger around the mic stand 3-4 wraps creating a very un-pretty coil. The weight from the stitching hoop presses down on the coil which gives enuf friction for it to keep from sliding down the mic stand (for a while). Problem is that it's not very stable.

And yes, it's UGLY.

Man, maybe it's worth it to shell out the extra money for a real one.

The Crap...er...Radio Shack sells clamp on mic holders and gooseneck extenders for not too much $. If you are willing to tape the thing to your stand support, what if you inverted the thing from the way it was intended to be used and use the clamp to hold the frame? (the clamps are threaded to hold a mic holder, like no. 3 in the link below). I have a couple and they are reasonably strong, although I have no personal knowledge of the thickness of the hoop.

For an example of the RS clamp, see #2 here:
http://laplaza.org/~fvuotto/sb_parts.html

Or, what if you drilled a hole in the outer ring, used one of those Sears riveters to rivet a small rectangular piece of metal to the bottom of the outer hoop, and taped that to something else taped to your boom--stick, support, etc. It would probably require two rivets, but seems like a good use for old beer cans as the source of the metal. Might require "experimenting" with various six-packs to get the right grade of can...

The Popper Stopper brand is $30. It is solidly built, has an extremely sure grip and the goose neck is excellent. Most important, the fabric is easily changed.

I've just finished testing two other brands - $19 and $24. The store hates me, but for $30, Popper Stopper is far and away the best value. (Plus, it has a neat, black, snaky posture - great to embellish those after-hours fantasies no matter how perverted!)

$30 is hard to beat. Can you use panty hose on their frame it needs to be replaced, or are you locked into their fabric?

I think coiling the hanger somewhat tightly around the mic stand is enuf to keep it still as long as you don't touch it.

Another thing I'm wondering though, this stitching hoop is plastic, about 4.5" diameter and about 1cm tall (if you lay it down on the table). I'm wondering if this is going to add sound reflections.

I guess I should just try it shouldn't I.

But I don't have any panty hose yet. I went to the store and asked the employees in pantyhose section which ones were nylon and no one seemed to have a clue. Some packages said 'linen' and others said nothing at all pertaining to the material. I wasn't sure so I didn't buy anything. Later I asked a friend's mom and she said that ALL pantyhose are nylon. So I'm not sure. I guess I'll just try the ones that don't say anything on the packaging.

I've taken the Popper Stopper apart to inspect what I'll need when the pizza particles and beer attach themselves to the fabric with too much lust. Looks like simple pantyhose to me. It's two layers, but one works well in my past pop experience.

If you replace with two deep, just find the spot on the leg or thigh (!) where you don't have to gather too much fabric for the shape of the thing.

It's a really terrific product.

Was the pizza and beer on the panty hose before you got it or after?

I also made a panty-hose pop filter...For attaching it to the mic stand, as someone else mentioned, I used a piece of flexible plumbing pipe that i found at the local hardware store...it's about a foot long, with smooth sections at each end...I used a hammer to flatten out both the ends, drilled 2 holes in each end, and used screws to connect one end to the tightening thingy on an embroidery hoop, and the other end to a little clamp that I also found at the hardware store...All in all it cost like $5 I think...There's a picture up @ http://www.eburg.com/~beyerlbj/pop.jpg if you're interested...

Unhappy

If you use tights you can have two singers use it at once. If you use the crotch bit make sure you wash them first.
