Buses & Bouncing

Ok I have each track output to my main bus called Main.

I also have all my submix & aux buses output to Main. (I'm assuming this is the way to do it - I don't want to create a monitor mix or anything)

When I bounce everything , I select Mix to Single track stereo and All Mains Out to Single mix, and all the buses are highlighted, including Main.

When I solo the bounced submix, it's quieter than the other tracks, like it's missed something out, but all the individual tracks seem to be there in the mix.

Shouldn't the solo'd mix play back at the same volume as the other tracks played together?

No, I don't think so. Say the Main is set to -3 dB. You bounce it. The result is a file with -3dB threashold. This file is played back via the main set at -3 dB again. -3 dB + -3dB = -6 dB.

Normally when you dump something to a new track, the output bus is set directly to a Vmain, so the -3 + -3 thing shouldn't be the case......

Do the phase invert thing Bulls - invert the phase on your dump after making sure it is bussed to a vmain and then play it back with everything. You should hear nothing.

I'm thinking the same. Set a clean dedicated buss to playback the 'master 2 track'. It can go to the same physical output but set at 'zero' so it doesen't double up on the setting or effects you might have inserted on the mix-out buss.
I keep one set up in all my templates to play the final 'bounced' track prior to export and to compare to the 'live' mix.

Where is the "new" track routed to?

If it is routed to the Main, then the problem could be as moskus described if the fader on the Main is set to less than unity.

If it is routed somewhere other than Main, that could be the source of your problem.

Also, do you have any plugins on the Main? If so, what?

Yeah I think you've hit it there Dachay.

The Main fader is set to 0, which is what puzzled me, but I've just noticed a 'mastering eq' plugin I threw on there scooping out the mids, so it would have been included in the mixdown. On playback, the mixdown track was output back to Main, got eq'd again, and so doubling up the effect....what an idiot.

I'm sure you've figured this out already, but: I would route the bounced track directly to the soundcard outputs...
