Yamaha MG16/4
I recently got a MG16/4. What are some good ways to record drums to 8 seperate tracks with this mixer?

Your mixer only has four busses (2 aux send + L/R main mix), so use the channel inserts to feed 8 mic preamps direct to your recorder/soundcard. Of course your soundcard will need 8 inputs.

Not quite right mshilarious, it also has a second stereo bus called Group 1/2. Bu tthat will still only give 6. There are inserts on 6 (from memory) inputs - miktunes just push a standard mono jack plug halfway into the send sockets (till you hear the first click) and that will give you a clean post pre-amp out for each of those six channels. Then if you pan 7 hard L 8 hard R and send them to the group output you've got your 8.
Hope that's what you were looking for.

I have yet to hear a bad word about the MG's from any of the users here (and I am very pleased with mine).

I too have had trouble getting all the info i need to make a decision on Yamaha's website so I got really goofy and actually used the telephone and called my local Yamaha dealer. I'm picking up a 12/4 next week.

There are 8 inserts, so if you tap those halfway (ie. until you get one click with the cable), those are direct outs, and the signal won't go to the mains or alt bus (if you insert all the way, you get the direct out, but then the signal can also be routed to other busses).
8 inserts on inputs 1-8 = 8 direct outs. The using the other sends, you get 2 on the main, 2 on the alt 3/4 bus, plus 2 aux sends total = 14 outs. |

ahh thanks guys for the help. I do have a card with 8 ins so this is working pretty well. I ended up routing 4 of the channels to buses for when I need to record some other things besides drums.
