Smile 3 new VF160 Songs...

Ok, I've uploaded my three latest songs:

http://www.ashbygrange.freeserve.co....hutMyMouth.mp3
http://www.ashbygrange.freeserve.co....erialistic.mp3
http://www.ashbygrange.freeserve.co.uk/03-Gravity.mp3

The first one is pretty much my typical hard rock self, the second has a nu-punk kinda feel to it and the third is a ballard for my wifey. All songs are entirley me recorded in my garage on my VF160.

Let me know what you all think.

Dave.

Great work mate! My connection speed is awful, so I only listened to the ballad, but even through my PC speakers it sounds excellent.

Hey, I like your songs. Really good tunes and quite a display of multi-genre talent. A couple of questions/remarks:

1. Did you play the drums or use drum machines? If you played them I am jealous because I have never gotten the knack of drumming. I could only wish. If you usesd a drum machine or computer drums then what did you use? Either way, good work, all your instruments sound as if done by the player of each intstrument. Also, very band-like sound. Hard quallity to get when you record solo (which is how I record, just me, myself and I).

2. I detect reverb on your vocal on "Gravity", but barely. Not much of any on the other two songs. Personally, I love reverb, but then again, I don't care for hearing my own voice. I find I frequently double track my vocals or, at least, add delay and or doubling to thicken the vocal. Then I add reverb, though I try not to 'Phil Spector' the recording. If I have any complaint about your song it is that the vocal is thin. Not weak, mind you, but thin. I have a DVD about Dark Side of the Moon and Alan Parsons used plenty of delay to thicken David Gilmore's vocals. As I said, I do a lot of (manual) double tracking.

3. Master effects--do you use them? I've been dabbling with this myself. If I have any major complaints about the VF160 it is the lack of master effects. But I do like to put some on the stereo mix and capture a "hall" atmosphere, especially since I do most of my electric guitars and bass through a POD and Boss GT-6. Great tools but you do lose "space" going direct.

4. Do you upload your songs for free? Or do you have a service that you subscribe to?

Anyway, way cool songs and a job well done.

Peace, Jim

Thanks very much for taking the time to listen, and the time to reply!

Ok, here goes - yes I played the drums, I have a nice Yamaha Stage Custom with Paiste cymbals. I started out drumming in bands, I feel it's my bread and butter, the rest I picked up later.

I tend to put very little vocal effect on my voice, I have put quite a lot on in the past but I could never get it to sound quite right, so I just put a little "hall" reverb on to give it presense.

Master effects, yes that's really all I use. I go direct into the VF160 with everything (except via a Zoom505 for the guitar), then add the VF160's own effects. I have no other effect units, so I make do the what Fostex has to offer.

I have a homepage that gives me 15megs of space, so I upload to there. It's not a lot of space, so I rotate my songs (I had to take 3 off my website to fit these 3 on).

Thanks again,

Dave.

Good stuff. Really dig Materialistic. What order did you record everything? I take it you did this all by yourself. But anyway, all three songs sound great.

Thanks for listening...!

I record Drums first, quite often in chunks, then do a little cutting and pasting (which I find so easy on the VF160). Then I record guitars, then bass, then solos and keyboards (not that there's any on these 3 tracks). Then I finish up with the vocals.

I got tired just reading that...
