Record Volume

I have used a cheap mic to record my sound and the volume is Ok when I speak, but the quality is not.

Now I have a better mic and I bought an adaptor for it to go in the computer. The adaptor is mono to mono. The problem is that when I start recording the sound volume is so low and it hardly picks up any sound.

I was told by a sales rep at Radio shack that I needed to reset a setting in the program. Can any one help me?

Nora

first off is it a dynamic or condensor mic. secondly, have you gone into you computer's volume controll and checked how high your line in level is. the third thing is you might need to get a preamp or mixer to process (boost) the signal before it goes into the conputer. you can get a preamp really cheaply from any guitar store but i would recommend if sound quality matters that you use a tube preamp. musiciansfriend.com has some nice ones that you could get for about $60. thats what i use and it sounds really good. thats all that i can think of but i am pretty new at this.
