No more MK-012's?

At Guitar Center today, I asked the dude if they had an MK-012's. He said "no".

According to him, the quality control is getting horrible. The packaging they use now consists of bubblewrap and a box.

I don't know the truth in this... but I really wanted a matched pair of these. Damnit. Ebay costs too much.

Well, GC wasn't selling matched pairs of them anyway.

If you really want a "matched" pair, talk to this guy:

GC did carry some mached pairs. Whether or not they were as well matched as the sound room, I don't know. Probably not, but they were half as much money too.

Blessings, Terry

I bought a "matched pair" from GC and I've never heard a more UN-matched pair in my life! The levels were close, but the frequency response was night and day! Needless to say I returned them and just matched up a pair myself there in the store (I wrote in a thread here about that experience). However, this was my one-time only experience and of course, your mileage may vary.

You bought one pair from GC that was bad and that means that the sound room is the "only" place you can buy a matched pair? Not exactly a precedence. I guess it really doesn’t matter since GC doesn’t seem to have them any more anyway.

I bought a matched pair from guitar center and they were just that. The Brookfield, Wisconsin store has one more "matched" pair for $250. I don't know if they are as matched as mine or not

looking to purchase mics

I currently only have 3 mics:
Sennheiser 441, Sennheiser 421, and a Rode NTK. (I borrow others and collaborate with friends for sessions, which at this point are few and far between). I am looking to eventually purchase some microphones to fit the role of the Octavas if not the Octavas. In anyone's opinion, is it worth purchasing the Octava's from SoundRoom ($426 for the single capsules and $659 for the 3 capsules)versus the Studio Projects C4's ($319.99)?

Much love,
Cuzme

Ok, I edited my post. I’ll try to refrain from speaking in such opinionated tones in the future. Get 'em where you can.

I think the problem was that GC once sold "matched pairs" and much more frequently sold mere "pairs," as in "twofer specials," and people predictably found these concepts beyond their capacities to differentiate.

I have a relatively well-matched "twofer" largely through blind luck.

I'm curious if GC is going to sell Oktavas in future or not. I'm finding the various contradictory gossip worthless. GC floor drones of course make it all up as they go along, but there is a lot of mutually exclusive explanation in relatively more reliable quarters as well.

That's way too expensive for me. Heh. I just wanted a pair that didn't have too drastic of a difference.

Are the MXL 603's comparable? (I think that's what they are)

Comparable in what way? The MXL603S is a brighter sounding mic than the MC-012. I prefer the MC-012 over the MXL603S as drum overheads... but I prefer the MXL603S over the MC-012 for things like acoustic guitar.

I think it depends on the guitar. On my Gibson I like a brighter mic, on my Taylor, the mk's are perfect( okay not perfect, but pretty, pretty cool)

I was just curious how similar they are. Hmm. I really like the MK-012's as overheads. I'm borrowing them from my friend right now.

I'll look into the 603s. I don't know anyone with them, so I'd probably have to take a chance on them. :-/

I just really, really liked the $100 price tag on the pair of MK-012's. :-)

Exactly how bad are the Behringer ECM8000's? I know that they're super cheap and have a pretty high self noise level, but if they don't sound bad... that will all get covered up by guitars and such when using them as overheads. For the most part anyway. I also get the impression that because they are omni's, they will not have as great of stereo seperation... is this true? I have never used an omni mic.

Sorry I'm asking so many questions.

No, they were "officially" matched by Oktava with frequency charts and all. The charts even had the mic's serial # on it. The charts on the pair I had were close, but like I said, the mics were not.

One sales guy I talked to a while back said he didn't think they'd be getting them at all and blamed it on Oktava not being able to produce enough (ask me if that makes sense?!).

But the latest information I have from a trusted source maintains that no one, including the Sound Room can get them due to import/export problems between the US and Russia. However, there still is a possibility, be it ever so slight, that GC could get some in, but the earliest would be several months from now.

I guess if the Sound Room runs out of them too, we’ll know for sure about the import problem. I’ve been trying to call them, but they’re not answering their phone today.

That was just during a special sale. Gas used to be around $0.50 a gallon too, but no sense in reminiscing and making ourselves sick.

Heh. Agreed.

Wasn't it a sale that happened more than once?

GC could very well have dropped Octava over supply issues. Nothing more fucked for them than running a nationwide ad on those mics and then not having any to sell. It's a waste of their time and resources.

It has been told to me that in order to get your product into GC you pretty much have to be able to supply their entire chain. That's a LOT of product.

So much for trying to get my home-made gobos or amp racks into GC.........

GC is notorious for not paying their bills. This is by far more likely, to be the problem, than supply issues.
