A Lack of Compatability :(

a band mate and i were trying to do some work on the same song by sending each other .wav files of individual tracks of our stuff. however, when he tried to send me a .sgw file of the finished product it turned out that our two versions were incompatable (i have 2.2. he has 3.3) and yeah i don't currently have the cash to upgrade.

so does anybody have any idea how i could maybe rip the withered .wav flesh from these SGW files or somehow change it to work on my version?

You would not expect ANY old computer program to read the files of newer versions. Microsoft Word 2.0 will not read MSWord 6 files.....

The easiest solution: UPGRADE! The current version is solid. I have it running on a self-built P4, a Gateway P2 and a self-built Athlon PC with NO PROBLEMS. (You say you dont have the cash but it's only what: $30??? You'll spend far more in TIME trying the following-)

Otherwise, he can solo every instrument and render out each one as a .wav file the entire length of the song. Then you can import them and they'll all start at time 0:00 so they'll all line up properly.

But it's sooooo much easier to upgrade.....

Yup. What Tim said. Version 2 is.. what? at least 2 yrs old now. As far as i know, the whole 'Packed Song' thing was added into ver 3. Don't think it even existed in ver 2.

Rendering individual tracks is the only way i can think of.

yeah that's what i was thinking too.

believe you me if i had any cash at all i'd be upgrading right now but i'm a currently jobless teenager with annoyingly frugal parents.

eh well, it'll take a while longer but i guess that renderin' stuff will have to do.

thanks.

Maybe I'm missing something but

if it's just the finished product you want, couldn't he just render that as a wav? Or are you really saying that what you want is the individual tracks? And how time consuming it would be for your friend to render the individual tracks would obviously depend on how many tracks you've got.

"Packed Song Format" was actually introduced in version 2.2.1, but Flavio totally revamped it for version 3.1.3 - he switched the compression scheme from WMA to OGG. Now I'm sort of hoping he'll switch back - WMA9 is great, and even offers lossless compression.

Then again, I don't think I've ever REALLY needed to use that feature, so I don't mind either way!
