Automation in Adobe

I'm about to purchase Adobe Audition 1.5. Can you do record automation in Adobe? Such as mixer automation and effects

Not that I know of. I have to draw the envelopes for changes.

How do the envelopes work compared to automation?

there're pros and cons, sucker. if you wanna compare the ability to program knob movements versus drawing envelopes... drawing envelopes is more precise obviously, but moving knobs feels cooler and is easier and is more natural. in a previous post, somebody mentioned that n-track studio is capable of doing both, but i just checked it out again and the interface, visually and functionally is still really crappy in my opinion. bottom line is, you can respectably fake automation in cooledit. you just can't record knob movements as far as i know

Drawing envelopes allows a great deal of precision. You can zero in on a note to be muted and you can pan wherever you want something. That said, I would like be able to push a fader or pan pot in real time, let alone in automated mode. It can be fairly time-consuming to draw an envelope to accomplish what you can do in analog with a free finger.

Oh well. It's the house you build, not the hammer you use.

Just FYI - Sonar also has the ability to either record the automation on the fly as the song plays or to use envelopes. I use both, depending on the situation. Envelopes are more precise, but not as easy as just playing the song and moving the fader or pushing the button or whatever while the song plays (I use a Mackie control -- it would be a lot less convenient with a mouse). This is especially true if I'm moving several faders the same way at the same time. On the other hand, for fadeouts, there's nothing like a quick envelope with a curve applied.

Both sonar and cubase have the ability to automate controller movements. I'll use sonar/cubase for midi recording and automation then dump it to cool edit for editing. I agree, if you just need fade in/outs, it's easier to use envelopes, which is what I do most of the time.
