r&b-based computer setup

Hey guys, first-time poster here. Right now I'm just starting to try my hand at songwriting. My style is/would be modeled after contemporary R&B giants--babyface, jam/lewis, brian mcknight, the underdogs (producers who have done Ruben Studdard/Tyrese's songs). At this point, as a poor college student, I just want a very basic setup, and when (and if) I graduate and make some real money, then I can upgrade my equipment. I'm a newbie so I'm not sure how it all works, but ultimately I'd like a bassline, drum pattern, piano, lead vocal, and as many background vocals as possible (my having experience in harmony vocal groups). I'm not too concerned about it being mixed perfectly or most of the technical work right now--I just want to see what kind of songs I can come up with.

With that said, could I conceivably accomplish that with a cheap yamaha MIDI keyboard, an alesis sr 16, a mic and say, a fostex mr-8? OR should I forgo the multitrack reocrder and just use a mixer and record into my computer? What program would you guys recommend? I only have a standard Soundblaster bard but I've read that it will suffice just as long as I'm not going to professional quality work.Thanks again for the help guys; I'm learning a ton just reading others' posts.

if your just starting out and you already have a pc and are short for cash you would probably be best recording onto your pc. get a cheap midi keyboard and a sure sm57 mic, as for software everyone has there own preferences, i think something like acid pro would be a good choice to start with (but check with other people first and get there input). As for your soundcard, check out kxproject.lugosoft.com as they make drivers for the soundblaster live to give it better performance for what you want, it doesnt cost a thing, but giving them a small donation may help the cause. good luck.
