Cool 5.1 Surround Q

Hey This is probably a dumb question. I cant figure out how to get surround sound when mixing, its probly the fact that i have only 2 speakers connected to the comp. But if anyone knows how to do this, or what kind of setup i need, if you could let me in, that would be great.
Thanks for any input

well first of all sound forge is only 2 tracks, so you can't do surround sound in it.. (although you could run it thourgh a matrix and get dolby's analog surround but that's a different animal from what i'm going to talk about) for 5.1 you need to have 6 discrete channels, a program that will do it, and a soundcard that you can output those 6 channels from... but the MOST important thing about surround sound is bass management... check a google search for surround sound bass managment and you shoulde be able to find something that can get you started....

nuendo or cubase... pro tools will do it too but you have to spend like $15-$35k to do it right...

So i take it that acid or pro tools are not suitable for surround sound mixing?

acid is not, its for beat making and a bit of recording.

Sony Vegas 5 (the new vegas) now has some really huge improvements to 5.1 and even 6.1 surround mixing. The program is used for audio, or video - i use it for both, and it rules.
Vegas 4 also does 5.1 though.

Yes, I've just started playing with the 5.1 Surround plug-in, for a film I'm helping with, (I can't remember if that's installed with Acid or if it's a plug-in) but you do have to activate the 5.1 or you'll only get 2/ch stereo

I'm not sure on SF (sound forge), but in ACID I just had to go to (file->properties (or preference can't remember)->audio) the default will be 2/ch stereo from the drop-down list select 5.1 as mentioned above you will need some way to monitor, I'm just using my Yamaha receiver, it has 6 seperate inputs.
