Clicking during recording

Hi,

If this post looks familiar, I <a href="http://www.homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=112210">posted</a> about it a few months ago. I'm back on the case!

I'm using an M-Audio Audiophile 2496 sound card with Adobe Audition. For this test, I am plugging a diskman directly into the sound card input. If I use the Windows Sound Recorder (it records at 44100, 16 bit), it records the music fine. If I use Audition, I get occasional clicks. You can actually see where the waveforms distorts (vertical slant, instead of a curve) as if it were skipping a few samples. I've set recording to 16-bit.

I have disabled all video driver acceleration, set the screen to low resolution, deactivated the virus scan, unplugged it from the network, checked for IRQ conflicts, rebooted and closed all applications. Everything is connected to a surge-protected power bar.

The problem, I think, is a software one. It's as if the two sampling rates weren't quite meshing, though the clicks aren't regular. They just happen once in a while, every 10-60 seconds.

Where can you set the sampling rate in Audition? I see that it says 44100 on the status bar, but I can't seem to find where that is set. If I go to View/Wave Properties/Sampler in the Edit View, I see Sample Period: 1/44101. I find that extra 1 somewhat troubling, but that gets set automatically.

One thing I did notice was that Audition was changing the sample rate in my sound card's control panel to 32000 whenever I would start recording. I then locked in the 44100 rate on the sound card control panel. The rate no longer changes, but that didn't help.

I've tried many different buffer size & number setting without luck.

Any ideas would be very appreciated! Even just telling me how to change the sample rate would be great..

I've had a similar problem with my Delta 44 and CEP 2.1. My issue was resolved by changing the IRQ of my card. It seems the M-Audio cards are REALLY sensitive to IRQ issues. I don't know why it didn't occur with Windows Recorder or Goldwave. I think it's because the quality just isn't up to snuff.

I could be off, but try moving your card to a different PCI slot. My guess is it's a hardware issue.

I just took the card out and put it into the other free slot. IRQ went from 17 to 16, but still no luck. Both 16 and 17 don't appear to have any conflicts. Sound Recorder still works fine.

The fact that Sound Recorder works makes me think it's settings between Audition & the sound card that don't jive, like sampling or buffering rates. I could be off base though.

Any further ideas are welcome! Thanks!

I discovered that the sample rate is set when creating a new session. I tried recording at 32000, but that didn't help.
