MIDI with Digi001 into PC

Alright, here's my problem. I can't get my drum machine into Pro Tools via the Digi 001. I have no idea what the problem is. I have the out of the drum machine to the in of the 001, and vice versa, but nothing is happening. The drum machine is a Alesis SR-16 (if that matters). Can someone please help me with what I need to do to get my MIDI to work in Pro Tools, with my PC? Thanks.

It would be helpful to know exactly what you're trying to accomplish. "Get my drum machine into Pro Tools via the Digi 001" is actually too vague. Do you have a sequence recorded on the drum machine, and you want to get the MIDI sequence data from the drum machine into ProTools so you can edit it? Or do you want audio from the drum machine recorded into ProTools?

I have sequences in my drum machine and I want to get them into pro tools. I know how to get the audio into pro tools, but I want to mess around with MIDI data. I also want it synced up to the midi clock so when I hit play in pro tools the drum machine starts working, so if I have to do the audio from the drum machine at least I can make sure everything starts at the same time.

You'll need 2 MIDI cables: one from the MIDI OUT on the 001 to the MIDI IN on the drum machine, and the other from the MIDI OUT on the drum machine to the MIDI IN on the 001. Then you need to configure ProTools to send MIDI clock to the drum machine. Select MIDI Beat Clock from the MIDI menu to enable this. Then, set the drum machine to slave to the incoming MIDI beat clock signal (check the manual).

Now, when you press "play" in ProTools, the drum machine should start. Arm a ProTools MIDI track, and you should be able to record the incoming MIDI data from the drum machine!

BTW you might have to turn off the MIDI Thru feature in ProTools. It's on the MIDI menu.

I have the midi hooked up correctly (in to out, and vice versa) and I have everything set up in pro tools. I don't get anything. Is there something in the pc that I need to do? I know that on a mac it has the audio midi setup is there something like that on a pc? Just checking. Thanks.

There is a MIDI setup on the Multimedia control panel, but I doubt that ProTools uses it. I would expect PT to address the Digi001 directly.

Maybe there's some setting up to do in the drum machine. Can you connect a synth to it and trigger the synth's sounds? Also, most drum machines transmit and receive on MIDI channel 10 by default, so you might have to allow for this.

Is this the same for lets say Cubase and a Korg Triton?? There are sequences in the Korg that I want to get to Cubase so I can edit, and then when I'm done play back through the keyboard for the sounds, back into Cubase to record the audio. Sorry I wasn't paying much attention in the MIDI recording part of my REcording SChool.

Can your Triton write files in standard MIDI format (SMF)? If so, that might be your best bet for getting sequences into Cubase.

Are you getting any kind of midi activity lights on the 001 or drum machine?

I'm not getting anything with the 001 or the drum machine. I just got my other drum machine (Zoom Rhythmtrak 123) hooked up and it just has a MIDI in and no MIDI out and I can control it with pro tools (the MIDI beat clock so the tempo of the session is the tempo of the drum machine playback, etc etc), but when I hook up the SR-16 I can't control it with pro tools and no MIDI information is getting recorded or even recognized. I've gone throug the manual and set everything up with the SR-16 the way it said and nothing is working.
