overhead dilemna
I'm looking to purchase a pair of SD's which I want to use for overheads and acoustic guitar. I'm looking at a matched pair of Octava's from the sound room for around 500 or should I go with Shure Sm81 for slightly more. Will I get a lot more out of the Shure in terms of micing guitars. Are they a much better overhead? Thanks boyz

why the hell do you need a matched pair? or even better question, why would you even consider octava if your budget is $500?

Well Fenix, if you have ever read any threads in this forum many people have said that Octavas from the Sound Room make decent overhead mics.

I give the Rode NT5s the thumbs up.

There's a lot of options for around $500...
I've had NT5's, and I liked them. Right now I've got MXL 603's, $200 for a matched pair, and I like them just as much. If you've already got other nice mics, like, say, some nice LD's and dynamics, then you might want to go with either SM81's or maybe AKG 451's. If you're just starting a mic locker, get the 603's and something else with the $300 left over. I got an ADK Hamburg with mine. ![]() Chris
