Check out http://www.audiominds.com
and http://ntrack.com/ntrackforum/index.html No, you cannot transfer digital audio over MIDI. MIDI is a totally different thing. What sort fo ins and outs do you have on that Fostex? |

hi Charlie.
Bubba's got it right; you need MIDI output jacks on the Fostex and MIDI input jacks on your sound card. There are a number of folks using an external, USB or Firewire device that will allow you to do this. Check in with the AudioMinds and n-Track forums to find someone who knows more about this. tj

But note again, you can't transfer digital audio over MIDI. IT just can't be done. It is like trying to run water through a telephone line.

Can't you do something with the S/PDIF I/O?

Charlie - see my response to your other thread. For your laptop you would need a USB or, better, Firewire audio interface which will accpet a digital in.

If you have SPDIF, I would use it. Just about any sound card with SPDIF will work.

and by using spdif i will be able to see each of the tracks on the screen of my computer and edit them individually?
when i see track i mean like each instrument.

To the best if my knowledge SPDIF is only two channels (i.e. Left and Right) It would depend on whether you can select individual tracks (solo) from your unit to import into your computer and save as individual wave files. Which in turn would then be imported into n-track via wave selections.

The only way any DAW software (N track, Steinberg, ProTools, any of them) will work with your Fostex is if you record tall the tracks into the DAW. So you would play back each track one at a time into the DAW and then edit from there. It is not an elegant solution, but it is all you can do unless the Fostex has some way to get everything through USB etc as a wav file which you could then import into N.
