Hi everyone,

I've got a Behringer XM2000 microphone and was wondering how good it is compared to other mics. I only use it for 4 track recording and have found very little wrong with it, but I was wondering how it compares to industry standard mics such as SM57's and 58's etc.

Any info much appreciated.

I have not had any experience with any Behringer equipment, but there's a reason why 57s and 58s are the industry standard.

Obviously, 58's and 57's are top quality mics but when it comes to 4 track recording how much difference is there really between different quality mics? I've used my Behringer for recording everything, drums, guitars, bass and vocals, and to my ears it sounds good. What I was after was, if I go for a 57/58 how much better are my tracks gonna sound? When recording to a 424 is there gonna be a significant increase in tone/quality?

Over the years of recording, I found one simple answer for sound quality:
Your recordings are going to sound as clean as the noisiest piece of gear in your system.

Surely someone you know has a 57 or 58 to let you barrow for the day. Best way to find out is to try it.

Hey Cooperman:

With mic prices dropping and inventories bulging, I would bet that you can rent about any mic you want for 30/60 days. Most people who record have several mics.

I have an AKG 3000 which is smooth, mellow, and clear. But, I also have a mic pre-amp that helps the "clear." I have a couple of Peavey mics that are not too bad. And, I just had to buy the old-time Elvis mic from Shure just to decorate my studio. It is a usable mic but not near the quality of the AKG 3 grand.

I believe that a good mic processor, and there are some dandies out there, helps greatly on vocals, as well as other instruments.

Try before you buy or borrow and try.
