Recording a theremin
How would you approach recording a theremin? What would your mic choice be and what tecnique. An specific plug-ins you would use or production techniques.
This is for a dissertation so any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, KJ. |

I'd prefer a really dead space for it - Unless you're looking for a "roomy sound" on tape (disc, etc.), I'm big on getting the control over it that comes from a dead space.
Mics... Jebus... You can put anything on it that sounds right. In a dead space you can just toss a small and a large diaphragm condenser up and start tweaking until you're getting what you want. It really depends on the model & mods and... Well, just everything. The tone, the tone you actually want... Boy, I really didn't help much at all on that... John Scrip - www.massivemastering.com |

They also go from very low volumes to very high volumes,
So a compressor will be needed, I have also done them direct into a tube pre then comp then into the board and had really good results also or you could go direct and use a good condenser mic and combine the tracks.

Yo K-TAC:
Theremin, huh? A weird ax. Kind of like waving your hands and pulling a sound out of the air. Trivia: Years back I was looking through the Chicago Musicians' Union book: there were hundreds of drummers, horn players, keyboard folks, etc. But, I did note, there was only ONE union theremin player and I caught her ONCE on WGN. It's all in the wrists. Green Hornet ![]() |
