Compressor for studio

Hi guys, I intend to start recording live bass and guitars onto my ProTools system. I will be needing a compressor and was wondering what people genrally knew about the Focusrite Penta or the DBX 266? Both are in my budget range. Or can you all advice any other brands in that price region?

Yo Shack:

Here in the "Colonies," the RNC [Real Nice Compressor] is a favorite.

It runs US dollars, around 175.00 -- I like its simplicity. I usually leave most of the dials straight up and push in the "real nice compressor" button. Marvelous. I do tweak the gain knob a bit depending on what I'm trying to achieve.

Uh, I'll have a Laphroig neat. Thanks.

Why do you need a compressor to record guitar and bass? Why not mic the amp you are playing through and compress after? Not being an ass, just curious

Thanks Green Hornet. Johnall, I understand what you mean, but I always like to get something good on tape in the first place, especially for example if I will be recording slapped bass which almost aways tend to cause digital clipping on my system and if it doesn't clip, the quiet bit is somehow too low and when I then compress after, it brings up a bit of noise..

Yo Jon:

With my rig, I use the RNC to get a nice "full" sound on bass or guitar. [I have to do those with my synth.]

I can control the clipping. I often run a track through my Grace 101, into the compressor, then into my 2816.

Pretty interesting results sonic-wise. I do like to experiment.

I can add compression via the 2816 but the RNC does a better job. I guess it's all a matter of "ear-taste?"
