patch bay?

Ok , I'm VIRGIN, I've never used a patch bay. Don't think I really know how they work. I think they bring the return/sends from the back of the console up into rack mount position, then you'r rack gear patches into the back of the patch bay,then on the front you use cables to asign a rack piece to a channel. Am I close?? Help, this may eliminate me wacking my head crawling under my console all the time!!
