Tube Compressor's

Hi, I'm in the market for a tube compressor. I live in a rural area and do not have access to music stores that demo these types of devices. I have searched ebay, read everything I could get my hands on etc and cant seem to make up my mind. I used a DBX something a couple of weeks back it was a tube pre/compressor. really pretty thing but you could hear distortion when you really started squashing the signal so that guy is out. Anyone used one of these Bellari devices? Avalon? Joe Meek? Budget is a concern but I would rather wait and scrape the money for a good one together than buy a junk one that I wont like over the long haul. I have had contact with some old UREI LA's and have experienced excellent results with those. I understand that Aphex makes a nice compressor. Any input is helpful.

Whats your budget and why does it have to be 'tube'?

I would be willing to spend around a grand if need be. I want tube for the warmth and richness etc. Tube isnt the way to go?
