would anything get hurt if i plugged a rackmount guitar preamp into my normal guitar amp and used that preamp as well? would it blow the preamp in my head or what?

It probably won't hurt your amp,but unless you keep the output of your preamp pretty low,it probably won;t sound very good, either,'cause the preamp outputs a line level signal whereas your amp wants to see the tiny signal most guitars put out.Cheers!

i don't think i can bypass the preamp on my amp.. what if i just turned the preamp control to 0 and used the "main" control for volume

I think there's a little confusion here. When I said "keep the output of your preamp low" I was referring to the rackmount unit's final output volume, which I assumed you wanted to plug into the normal guitar input on your amp.Am I right so far?

If you have an FX loop try plugging into the "in" jack - that might be "after" the preamp.

That's the next thing I was going to suggest;higher probability of level matching w/this scenario.
