which would be best?
My Bro-in-law drew these studio pics for me. I like the first attachement best, I think? I am going to start on this garage conversion in about a month.

Before commiting to any of the three, may I suggest taking a look here.

No prob Rob
This will get you to the heart of the matter. The last site is John Sayers. This site was created by him also. I think this will illustrate what I was saying.http://www.saecollege.de/reference_material/index.html fitZ ![]()

It is important for the control room to be symetrical. Your's is not.
Read up at the SAE site, re-do your design, then come back here and re-post it.

Michael and RICK thanks,
I found this pic in another thread on this board---see attached. The dimensions are almost the same as my space and my ceiling is 9'8". I was hoping to isolate the drums from the rest of the room if possible. I could make a movable partition for some drum isolation if needed. I am also wiring the living room for an additional live room. My piano is located in the living room. I am going to have 4 Xlrs and 2 headphone jacks in the living room. Using the basic shape in the attached pic and the living room would give me 2 live rooms and a great control room. In the living room I would use removable bass traps and some removable acoustic damping foam where needed. Am I heading in the right direction...? Thanks again in advance..... Rob |

If you make movable panels, you're not going to isolate anything.
Isolation requires mass, density, and above all, air-tightness. You could isolate the drums in the latest picture you posted, but that would mean building an entire wall. Low frequencies (such as from drums) are the most difficult to isolate. You'd need a pretty heafty wall there to do it. It could be done, just depends on how far you want to take it. You mentioned this being part of a living room? Then this is not a dedicated studio?

Michael,
The living room is a separate room adjacent to my garage. I would only use the bass traps and acoustic damping foam to reduce the echo in the living room. My wife would insist I not clutter the living room. I am converting my 2 car garage to a dedicated studio. I would only use the living room on special occasions. I made another drawing, (I am not an artist) Thanks again... Rob |

Being a disorganized fellow, I have not complied with request to any level of satisfaction. This is when you come home from work, and find all your stuff in boxes in the attic never to be seen. I have really hungry dragons in my attic that eat anything. Don't you? Though to be fair, she has been asking me to remove the alternator off the coffee table for about six months now. |

Rod, the 2 plans your brother in law drew aren't bad. They're a good starting place.
I would just try to gain some symmetry in the Control room, avoid parallel walls, and watch out for 90 degree corners.

Maybe something along these lines:
(I'm not sure if the doors you show into the studio are existing or proposed)

Of course you'd have to change the position of the desk in the CR. Put it along the drum room wall.

Michael,
I love the drawing. I will implement your design. The help I have received from this forum is unbelievable. I will take photos before, during and after. BTW: If any body is really bored I posted a link to an original tune in the MP3 clinic (sorry for the shameless plug). |
