midi drum controller

i'm moving to california in september. i will be moving from a house into an apartment. that means that i can't make a lot of noise when recording. i'm looking to sell my drum set and buy some good midi drum libraries. what i really need is a midi drum controller. does anybody use them? has anybody heard of any really good ones out there?

p.s. - if anyone is interested in a 5-piece pearl session series kit. i have one that i'm lookin' to sell.

I'm using a Hart Mulitpad that runs into a Roland TMC-6. The TMC-6 feeds either my Roland XV5050 synth, or my GigaStudio computer.

I don't know if the Roland has enough trigger inputs for you though.

i'm also thinking about getting gigastudio. could you tell me what the specs of your computer are, just so i can get an idea of what i'll need to have a well running system?

thanks much

I bought a separate computer for the giga studio. Some folks try to run their tracking software and giga on the same machine but it seems like a recipe for disaster. Giga uses a lot of memory.

My giga computer is a AMD based machine - can't remember if it's an Athlon or Duron, pretty sure it's an Athlon - running at approx 1.4 GHz. 1 GB RAM, 2 hard drives.

I bought a package deal where you get Giga 96 and a Tascam PCI card for around $300, not sure if this deal is still around.

thanks alot for the help. i'm trying to completely re-vamp my setup and its quite the headache. there are so many things to sort through and new products and problems popping up everywhere.

i just thought of another question. since you use gigastudio... do you have any favorite acoustic drum, piano, string, etc. libraries? i've got alot in mind and i'm just trying to narrow it down some.

thanks again. your help is much appreciated.

I just bought the PMI Bosendorfer Grandioso piano library and like it quite a bit.

I also have the Garritan Lite Strings which I don't like at all. No solo instruments, very limited articulations. Not what I wanted at all. I'll do more research the next time I buy a string library.

As far as percussion, I have Silk Roads, which is a collection of African and Middle Eastern instruments. I've only played with it a little but I like it so far.

I use the drum libraries in my Roland XV-5050 sound module quite a bit. They're okay, I can't say how they compare to other libraries.

NorthernSounds.com has a forum where people discuss sound libraries. There are a number of professional composers there and reps from the sample library companies (Garritian, PMI, etc) post there quite often.
