just know this is a midi controller, so you would need a program that it can interface with (cubase, acid, fruity loops) to trigger the sounds in that program (or you would need your own sounds if the program does not have its own, fruity loops comes with its own set, but they are not that good). you could start with something like this, but you would also probably want to get some samples as well (from CD, or just download one hits from sample web pages)

I recently bought this unit, but I haven't started using it yet. I can tell you a couple of things - the keys are fairly small, so if you've got gorilla fingers watch out. The pads are velocity sensitive, which automatically makes it a step up from my Roland SP-808, but they still won't feel as good as the Akai pad set, which you can buy separately for about $300 if you've got the cheddar.

Otherwise, this baby feels extremely solid and will look great on your desk - and that's what really matters, isn't it?

I do have gorilla fingers lmao, that's what you call them? haha

ok, are you saying that the keyboard doesn't have any sounds? Like I couldn't play notes on the keyboard?

I wanted to get the Akai but someone told me to get this one for me because it has keyboard keys and it's own sounds.

Okay....

It is a MIDI CONTROLLER.

It doesn't have its own sounds.

If you have big fingers, you should take a look at the Akai MPD 16.

You can MPD to trigger your samples.

You will also need a program to hold the samples.

I would suggest BATTERY by Native Instruments.

You'll still need a program to track/record.

Check out Acid by Sonic Foundry, uuuh .....I mean Sony.

Fruity Loops

I'm going nutty looking for a piece of hardware:
what i want:
midi in/out
sampler (read from cd?)
drum machine

thats all, i dont want a sequencer/track editing any of that, for that stuff i'm getting pretty good with some GNU freebies.

Anyone have any tips for me? I've heard MPC200 a few hundred times I'm not quite sold on it though.

Absolutely.. You'll never find all your requests for three hundo. Look into the older AKAI line- s1000, s3000, or the earlier Roland samplers. Buy one of the computer sequencers that Spin suggested, and you're half the way there.
