setup tips

How y'all doin? I need some advice. I'm lookin' to set up a studio that I can base around my HP Pavilion PC (if needed I can outboard it with extras to make it better). I need to know about what all the best stuff would be. I have Cool Edit Pro already and won't sacrifice it for anything else, so don't suggest recording software, but tell me the best drum machine, sampler, sequencer, mic, preamp, mixer, monitors, headphones, and ways to connect it all to the computer (preferably let me know where I can get this off the net...I hate internet shopping). Money, since I'm going to be buying it all individually, is no object. Just let me know the best right now and give me a price for it and the store to get it from.

PS I know I posted before asking how to connect my current Numark mixer to the computer, but I want something better than that mixer, so suggest all that you will.

...

whats your budget??

you say money is no object, but do you have enough to cover some $10k dollar piece of equipment???
because people would start suggesting the "best" money can buy if your saying money isnt a object

peace

Little confused, but you say you don't want to switch from Cool Edit and yet your asking for the best sequencer . Also, I like adobe (cool edit) but I think - and somebody correct me if I'm wrong - that if your also looking for a sampler you would not be able to run one in Cool Edit....?

Just a thought..

Hey, I never said I knew what any of the stuff was for. I know samplers...didn't know about running one through Cool Edit, though. Besides, I keep hearing about this drum machine that's a sampler and all that all rolled into one. I don't know if I'm able to run it through CEP, but I can find ways around that. Anyone know which one it is?

Tell how much you want to spend and how you plan on doing your music. ie Live 5 piece band, keyboards and samples, 1 vocal at a time, recording 1 sound source at a time, etc ?

we can go from there.

If I would have asked around when I first started I would have saved a hunk of change, thousands. But no, I listened to the salesman. LOL

peace

Alright for the hardware I heard about that samples and is a drum machine and all that rolled into one, I heard it was somewhere around $400. So, I'll be looking to spend in the $400-$800 range with each piece of equipment.

What I'm planning to do is use this studio setup for beatmaking and hip-hop/r&b recordings. If it can be set up as more than one vocal source at a time, that would be good, but I can settle for single source mic equipment. Also, for the sake of samples, I might want to try hooking drum mics into a mixer and sampling sounds from a drum kit that way, so suggestions to that type of mic would be good.

In that case, I would get a good soundcard, A cheap midi keyboard or controller, a condensor mic, decent micpre, Softsynths for instruments and Drums, and a sequencer like Sonar,Cubase, etc. That wll give you a better sound than you think once you learn how to work it all, mix, and record with a good clean signal.

I dont really like recommending products . You may need to go to the newbie forum and search. But if I was just starting out in todays technology and wanted to do what you are trying to do I " and this is just me" would go with these.

mic= Marshall V67g
micpre = DMP3 or a SP VTB-1
sequencer = Sonar XL
Softsynths = I would look for freebies. I like Reason though. Surreal is also pretty good and cheap.
keyboard = any one that does midi
soundcard = just too many options

there you go !

As far as the keyboard thing goes, I got one that does midi, it's just a cheap one from Radio Shack.

If you buy monitors either buy Genelec 1030a;s with a sub, or Mackie HR824. That will set you up fine and dandy. HR824 gonna be about $1200. Genelecs over $2,000.

My HR824s are pretty sweet to me.

Some like them some dont. I do. If I were to get a cheaper monitor I would go with the Yorkville Ysm1s
