Drum track creation advice needed

Need experiences from you guys as to what kind of drum track creating programs work well with Cubase. That's the last element I need top add to my "studio". I'm not planning on doing any Chemical Brothers type stuff, mostly straightforward rock and roll.

Most "drum synth" plugins (vst intruments) will sound exactly as the name implies -synthy. Drum machine ones such as the LM7 that comes with Cubase aren't a whole lot better, but you can use the included one to get some decent sounds for free.

What I would suggest to get a more organic and natural sound using MIDI to sequence would be to get some type of VST sampler. I like the ones from Native Instruments the best. They make one called "Battery" that is designed to be used for drum sequencing. You could also look into their flagship Kontakt if you want to do other types of sampling.

Sampling is much more flexible, because you can record and tweak your own sounds, and then record the midi information to sequence...this is assuming you have access to recording equipment to create your own samples. However, there is also a wealth of samples you can download or purchase.

I'd suggest using Fruit Loops instead of a Cubase plugin to get more realistic sounding drums. You can export your drumtrack to a wav and import that into Cubase. If you want to record guitar or whatever first and add drums to that you can record to the metronome in Cubase and import the guitartrack into Fruity Loops, create the drums and import them in Cubase..

You can actually use FL Studio as a VST instrument in Cubase. But a VST sampler like Battery or Kontakt will do the same thing. If you're already used to Cubase, and you're satisfied with it, FL is kind of a redundant purchase. Grab a soft sampler (or a hardware one, and sequence via Cubase) and you'll be in good shape.

Any chance you could post your Fruity Loop drum track? I'm also having some issues trying to get that AiC/Matt Cameron drum sound (off-beat fills, hit-hat trills, etc.)

I love to check out your Fruity drum track to see how you got some of your rhythm going.

Cubase + Battery + Drumkit From Hell = the BEST and most realistic sounding drum tracks I have ever heard as long as you take some time in making them.

They sound REAL.

Cubase, battery, and dr rex in reason 2.5. Just rex up your wavs in recycle, throw them in the dr rex and away you go.

Drum Kit From Hell SUPERIOR sounds better then all that you guys mentioned... however it takes up a rediculous amount of harddrive space i.e. 40gigs!

Yes, I recently bought drumkit from hell superior and it is probably the greatest thing ever invented ever. It is however quite difficult to use and a lot of people have a hard time using it let alone programming good drums with it.

at first it's hard, it took me about a week or two just to understand the concept of it-well I also read the directions for once. LOL!

Kontakt or Battery from native instruments are both great vst samplers for plugging acoustic drum samples. Sources for decent acoustic samples include: www.sonicimplants.com and www.wizoosounds.com

Hey guys....I use midi and use the drum sounds on my korg Karma, or my Roland xv-5050...they sound pretty damn good....but I did just get Drumkit from Hell....I have Halion, but have never done the VST instrument thing for midi? I hope I can get it going, cause I heard DFH right when it came out. Infact, I heard Criss Brooks solo cd and he used it on some I think....I know I heard it on someone's songs? But it sounded so PHAT! I knew I needed to get it since I do all my drums myself! Fruity loops I heard is pretty good

Lorde, I figure if you can figure out how to use a midi sequencer in your comp to trigger hardware, it should be a walk in the park for you to figure out VST instruments. I've been using the cubase loop function and my interface to play drum loops, then tweak them by hand. Incredibly fun stuff, though I guess not likely to be good for more rock-oriented stuff.
