MP3 Sharing Legalities

Just wondering if anyone knows about the technicalities of sharing MP3's on a network. Im not talking about one like Kazaa or Napster but just a computer to computer network existing on (most likely) a college campus. Is it illegal to listen (not download) to songs of another persons computer?

I'd like to get into a legal/ethical conversation about this.

I'm by no means a legal scholar, but if the 1's and 0's that make up the song aren't copied (except for whatever the OS needs... Temp files, etc.), I think it would be alright...

It's like watching someone else's TV and not recording it.
