Some solo and duo guitar

Hey all,

I find it really hard to leave things too dry, and as a result I sometimes worry that I tend to get them too wet.

Case in point: a couple of guitar recordings, part of a demo I'm working on to try to get some wallpaper jazz gigs or attract some singers and other melody intruments to work with me -- or even another guitarist who could trade off and accompany me sometimes.

Are they too wet?

Part of the problem is, they are recorded direct, via an ART Tube MP Studio preamp into my Delta 66, and are as dry as a bone when tracked. I tried to be subtle but...

They're reachable from http://alanoehler.com/alanoehlermusic/demos.php

Seems a bit muddy to me. That may be the sound your going for, but it just seems it has the type of tonal quality that would distort easily on a poor system.

Talking

That's always the trouble when you ask questions like this... you get all opinions, diametrically opposed and everything in between, so it comes down to your own ear anyway...

Rhythmschism, good point, I will try the boom box test with these. This kind of guitar style is always a bit on the muddy side.

Sounds great to me. Your skill shines through, and probably would no matter what the recording quality.

I'm surprised how good the lead guitar sounded here through the art (I have an art tube mp studio myself, but never tried it for direct... maybe I'll bust out my ibanez artstar and see what happens!).

The rhythm guitar sounded a little muted/dark... but maybe that's what you were going for - to leave room for the lead?

Nice playing!

I was trying to have the comping part on that one track be dark as opposed to the solo guitar part... the only real difference was I turned the tone control a little towards the treble.

Yeah, I though it sounded pretty OK through the ART, thoug I bet micing it woul dsound better still.. it's just too inconvenient to do that with my current setup.

I tried recording first with the POD, using the Black Panel model, but I coulkd not seem to avoid getting some clicks in the recording. First I thought it was my DAW misbehaving, but when I recorded through the ART, no problem. It's as if the pickups on this particular guitar cause the POD to respond with some sort of digital artifacts when I dig in, despite the signal not being particluarly hot at all. Really strange; I never notice any problem with my other guitars through the POD with distorted electric tones.

And thanks for the comment on the playing... I feel like I'm starting to get somewhere, finally, after all this time...

It's nice, man...and I'm familiar enough with the tone (I think) to know what you're going for. I do not think they're too wet, but maybe a wee bit on the dark side. You could get away with cutting a little of the 150-500Hz stuff, in my opinion.

Nice chops, btw.

I'll give those EQ tweaks a whack and see how they sound.

Thanks for the compliments! I'm a little afraid they tread the line between being just a tad too sloppy and being charmingly imperfect and "real."

you skill makes up for any eq problems that anyone could possibly suggest. But if you must tamper (haha) you could change it up a little behind the board. Still, very impressive work.

Sounded good to me. I once took lessons for lead quitar and, this is the stuff he wanted me to learn first. "Misty" ect. ect.
Good playing, I'm just not into it. I like that good ol' rock & roll.
Keep playing, sounds good if that's what you like....

Flash,

Check out my Nowhere Radio tunes if you want to hear something more electric and powerful.

http://www.nowhereradio.com/artists/...d=1548&alid=-1

They're more representative of me, you just can't play like that in restaurants, dinner parties, hotel lobbies, and weddings... so ya gotta adapt...

And, packratlouie, thanks for the kind words (blushes).
