Cubase 5.1 cannot record (new 1820)

Hiya. Gotta problem, installed the new system today. Here's what's up:

1) I get a level in the mixer (patchmix) from my instrument.
2) I cannot get that signal into Cubase to record it. Nothing comes through.
I have tried finding where the connection between the two is but have not had success. The 360 page PDF manual is not helping. But I am a complete newbie moron too.

In the old says I'd say the mixers out was not connected to the recorders line in, but darned if I can figure out how to get that signal hooked up in this modern virtual world.

I got it working late last night. This is more complicated than I'd hoped. I saved the small bit I recorded and when I opened it this morning it played back fine, even had the metronome which I had somehow lost. But now after trying to add another track it's not working again. I even get an increasingly loud "wooshing" noise after I hit Enable for the channel I want. Just can't seem to reliably get the EMU patchmix to talk to the mixer in Cubase. I'll show levels in Patchmix, but none get through to Cubase. I've checked the assigned inputs and outputs and can see nothing different from when it worked last night. Now I'm outta time and have to go to work. Rats.

The "wooshing" turns into feedback or something like it. I've got that phenomenon to cease, not sure how, but now I have an echo, 4 or 5 fading repeats, and I can't see anywhere where that effect should be active.
Wish the manual for CUbase was a bit more geared to a doofus beginner like me.
I'm not going to let this beat me, dammit. I've tackled bigger obstacles before.

OK! I got it! Had some slow time at work this afternoon so I downloaded the manual from EMU and printed the pages that looked relevant. Followed the procedure once I got home and now I've several bars of Bass and Guitar playing "Bitch" by the Stones as a test. Slick once you get the right set up plugged in.

Told ya I'd get it!

About how many hours of manual digging did it take you to actually start using the thing? And when are you going to post a recording for us, as well?

Uuh, I did'nt think anybody was listening. It took a bit of looking to find what I needed. Page 65 is were the basic procedure info for Cubase starts. Go figure, it's Chapter 7-Working with ASIO-Basic recording. You also need to read pg 16-28 and then pg.37, all of which deals with the Patchmix DSP Mixer which needs to be set up first before you can do anything as far as I can tell. I just did not understand the signal flow when I first tried stuff. The DSP feeds the Cubase VST Channel Mixer which then feeds into Cubase's recording section proper. It's about getting the E-MU box and software to talk to the Cubase software. This is probably a no-brainer for experienced users, but I'm obviously not one of those.
Pg 18 and pg 69 are key. They give the best overall view of the procedure, the rest fleshes it all out. There are a few discrepancies between the manual and what you actually see, like the ASIO device in Audio system setup screen does not list E-MU ASIO as the manual says. It's called something else(I forget) but it is easy enough to figure out.

I've been having a bitch of a time getting the cubase vst working. I have figured out the basics of patchmix, and do have wavelab and acid 4 pro working on my 1212m.

i'll see if i can scan those pages you mention, and get it working with cubase, and hopefully not screw the settings up for the wavelab and acid 4 pro. Thanks!
