LapTops and Keyboards

What would be a pretty reasonable (price and type) of Laptop to get for use of soft synths?? Am thinking about using this for live shows along with my other keyboards.

I like dell inspiron laptops personally. Get the most bad ass one you can afford. Big harddrive and prefferably about a gig of memory.

I have a Dell Isnpiron 5100 P4 2.66 GHZ 256mb of ram(I need more)......... I have used it for synths etc. for a long while.
ASIO drivers are a must as always.

I am going to use mine with a echo indigo I/o and a M-audio Radium 49, Behinger UB802 mixer, Sonar3, Reason and Ableton Live for a traveling studio and live rig! I have a AT-3035 for vocals when recording.

Dell's start cheep (celerons are ok! Just my opinion) so look at there site. I'm sure my machine is cheeper then when I ordered it. I'm still paying for it though.

If you do some research in the Computer Recording and Soundcards forum as well as over on harmony-central.com, you will find out Dell laptops have serious issues with Firewire interfaces. If you plan to use Firewire (which you should over USB), I would think twice about going with Dell.

I recently bought an eMachines M5309 for $1000 after rebates at Best Buy. It works very well with Cakewalk HS2004 and has a Firewire port as well as a 15.4" widescreen display.

If you like a dead machine then go for the E-machine......
I have owned four count em four Dell's from a PII 300MHZ to a 500mhz Celeron a PIII 933mhz to the curent P4 2.66 GHZ Inspiron.
And the thing is I still own them and they still have use in my studio and home I doubt that they will die any time soon!!
The only reason I didnt get a Dell when I got my last machine was because the 2.4ghz celeron was a gift..........

Seriously, go Dell or sony if thats your price range. If you want to spend a bit more you could get a Native Underground Laptop that my friend sets up.
Its a killer machine but spendy. but feature laden with digital S/Pdif standard and lots of expandability.
I would have got one but it was out of my range.

Oh and by the way USB 2.0 out runs Firewire, and my Dell works well with both Firewire and USB 2.0 and USB 1.1 interfaces.

I guess you missed the reports saying customer dissatisfaction with Dell is on the rise. On the other hand eMachines actually has top notch technical support and their newer laptops are getting excellent reviews. I have yet to encounter any problems with my M5309. eMachines has also been recently bought by Gateway which will make the combined company one of the top 3 PC manufacturersin the country.

As for speedy laptops, try reading up on eMachine's M6807 laptop with the Athlon 64 processor.

Gateways and e-machines and alot of other laptops are the same exact machine........ for example Dell and Toshiba and a few others are made in the same factory. Same for Gateway and e-machines..............
Keep that in mind. they are the same machines. BTW I have never needed tech support because my Dell machine keeps working fine.
Sorry, to get into a dispute when trying to help BSR2002........

I will say AMD makes a good processor lately but I still lean on Intel for stability and speed............

Yep this is what I was gonna say. I use one .. I use a midi man 1x1 and Maya USB sound card. they are a pretty trim laptop. Affordable, powerful and not alot of extras ..

I Personally use a PowerBook 1 Ghz with 1 gig of Ram using Logic Audio 6 with all the plugin synths...

Very nice very stable... But, I'd say go with a Dell if you're interested in the PC side of things...
