Need info on Optimizing Win2000

I just moved over to my new system:

AMD 2600+ 333mhz
ASUS A7N8X-X Motherboard
512 DDR Non ECC
Echo Mia(WDM)
Matrox 450 Dual Monitor 16bit
WIN 2000 Professional
Maxtor 7200 40gig
Cubase VST/32

Problems noticed on first trial:
1. When editing a drum Track, as the current position marker reaches the end of the screen and pages over (during play) the audio cuts out, CPU maxes, disk maxes, then audio comes back to resume play.

2. When using CTuner (VST chromatic tuner) audio would cut in and out, and the CPU would max continually.

I NEVER had the above problems on a PII 350 w/ 256 ram and Win98SE.

Latency on the Echo Mia is set at 6ms w/ a 256 buffer. Truetape/32 mode.

Any Ideas or links, will be VERY APPRECIATED.

Thanks,

Blind Cowboy...

Have you updated Win2k with the latest service packs and critical updates from Microsoft ? Fairly easy thing to try with the Windows update option.

No. My DAW does not have access to the net. All drivers for the audio card and Matrox are updated though.

Here is a link from a recent article in Emusician

http://emusician.com/ar/emusic_xp_audio/index.htm

I realize the article is based on XP, but many tweaks should be similar. There are also links to web sites dealing with tweaking windows.

Also I think you can still download the latest service pack from here. Click on one of the download options on the right then you can burn the saved file to CD.

Thanks Vestat!

I'm currently reading the articles, and appreciate the advice. I'll update to SP4 tonight. I intended to, but hadn't yet searched for the SP4 update. Thank you for finding that link for me.

Any other tips and tricks, much appreciated.
