MIDI Problems In Cubase SX1

I'm really, really new to MIDI, so if this seems stupid keep that in mind.

My problem is that I can't get Cubase to record any of my VST instruments. I've read the manual done everything that it says to do, but when I play it just doesn't record anything.

I don't have a MIDI controller yet, I'm just using the mouse to mess around, but I want to be ready to record when I get a controller. Is the lack of a MIDI controller my problem? Any help would be appreciated.

YES basically. You cannot record without a midi controller. I assume you are trying to record by clicking with your mouse on either the keybaord in the key editor on cubase or the keyboard on the actual VSTi. Cubase does not record this and to be honest i you would have to be a wizard with the mopuse to play something decent in.

Short of a midi controller the only way is to manually draw notes in. Create a midi track and draw a midi event onto the track using the pencil tool. Ensure the midi tracks output is set to the VSTi you wish to use. Now double click on the event and using the pencil tool draw in a sequence of notes. Now press play any your master piece will be heard.

Hope this helps.

Cool, thank you for the help.

I definitely wasn't looking to use the mouse as a way to record...you're right that would be difficult. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't a software problem or something I needed to fix in Cubase. Thanks again for the help.
