Unhappy 788-buzzing Noise In Channel When Compression & Delay Combined

HORRIBLE DIGITAL BUZZ.
HAS ANYONE EVER HAD THIS PROBLEM WITH THE 788?
IT ONLY HAPPENS WHEN I APPLY DELAY & COMPRESSION AFTER RECORDING. ALL THE OTHER EFFECTS ARE FINE.
AND IT ONLY HAPPENS IN CHANNEL 6.

Hi,

I've just been recording a lot of ideas and haven't used my 788 in mix mode lately... but there is a way to REALLY BOOST the compressor. You can set it to I believe, +6dB. If that's on, then that could be the big noise problem?

Is it possble you have a track that's been written over, or mistakenly assigned and it got noise recorded to it? For example: if you were recording just the left channel of your keyboard or guitar effects onto to track 4 maybe track 3 got the noise (see example below). Tracks are (I believe) assigned in pairs (1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7/8) be default.

To assign or de-assign tracks: Press and hold "Select" on track 3 and if the green LED lites on track four then their assigned as a pair. To assign only track 3 press and hold "Select" on track 3 and press "Select" on track/channel 4. It's a toggle function, so if you press "select" on ch. 4 again it's assigned as a pair again.

Scott

HMMMM...

I THINK IT MIGHT BE INHERENT IN SOME 788'S. I ASKED SOMEBODY IN ANOTHER FORUM AND THEY HEARD OF THIS PROBLEM BEFORE FROM SOME. AND APPARENTLY, NOBODY KNOWS WHY IT HAPPENS. NOT EVEN TASCAM.

I WILL HOWEVER INVESTIGATE YOUR SUGGESTION.
AS FAR AS THE SECOND IDEA YOU HAD, THE NOISE ONLY APPEARS AFTER APPLYING BOTH EFFECTS. ONCE I REMOVE THE COMPRESSION AND/OR THE DELAY, IT STOPS.

Another thing to check is what effect do you have assigned / turned on. I got a similar sound one time and did not realize the effect program I chose had compression / DISTORTION / delay etc.
and when I turned it on the distortion was in the on mode. If
you are usng one of the multi-effect programs you will need to scroll thru each effect and turn the distortion effect off.

Just another idea

I hope not. If so, it's the worst distortion I've ever heard. This doesn't seem like that but I'll check.
Thanks.

Jasongs,

There was talk of some distortion being introduced on channel 5 in the old tascam forum. It was on playback, without any effects or compression which really screwed with some heads. If I remember correctly, it ended up being bad soldier joints.

I've tried to get what you're describing using the multi effects and it's not happening. With just compression & delay, really pushing the post gain and all other parameters, I can get some distorted sounds, but it's just from overdriving the shit out of it.

A call to Tascam won't hurt. Sorry, best I could do!

THANK YOU

Is there a way to post a small audio clip on this site so I can give you a representation of what it sounds like?

Check back on the cmoore site. Do you remember Larry Robinson from the old Tascam site?

He's got some ideas on what might be causing your problem.
