Can you buy monitors without a recorder to test it on?

I'm thinking about getting a Akai Dps24. Along with that I'm going to have to get a ton of other stuff like mics, monitors, headphones, cables, furniture, etc. all of which is going to be expensive.

Anyways, theres going to be a new model for the DPS24 coming out in July so I'm think maybe it would be better to put more money into getting really good extras like the monitors and other stuff and just wait to buy the recorder later. I'm going to need all of it, if I'm going to get any use out of it anyways, and it may be too much to try to get all at once.

Do you think I could seriously test monitors with out really useing them to mix? Like by just listening to CDs and checking them with dvd sound?

Some I'm thinking about are the Blue Sky's and Mackie HR824's.

Thanks for your input.

I use monitors as "B" sets for at least several months before they "graduate" to the "A" position.

So, getting monitors and listening to them whenever you can so you can get used to them is actually a great thing to do.

P.S. I won't make any friends by voicing my opinions on monitors, so I'll just have you leave it to your ears.
