Drum mic help please

I'm after some good but cheap midrange drum mics or maybe some really good lowrange mics for my kit mainly for gigging and home recording nothing fancy.

I have currently a 5 piece mapex saturn pro (soon to be 7 piece not including extra snare but only need one snare mic)

Do some mics have diffent fundamental recording sounds than others? oh and info about mixers too.

thanks

I think that a good setup of mics for your kit could be:

The one an only SM57
A pair of OH, maybe a pair of Oktavas MC012, or MXL603 (that´s what I got)
For kick ATM25 or AKG D112 (I have a PRO25, not a great but it works for me and my budget)

This is based on my experience

TS

P.S. Thank you for your suggestion about remo ambassador for snare side, I´ll check and try it.

If you want to go the cheapest, get one of those packages, like the Audix Fusion or Shure PGDMK6 packs. Or here are some cheap/er solutions.

Overheads: AKG C1000's (you can usually buy two on ebay for $230.00 or less)
Snare: SM57
Toms: Three PG56's
Bass: Shure PG52

This would add up to around...$450.00 give or take 50 and that's not that bad.

Behringer mixers would be your best bet if you're on a budget, unless you really want a huge-ass Mackie mixer.

i just recieved my superlux mic kit, and i have to say that for 99.00 they do a very descent job. i purchased these mics thinking that if they were crap i wouldnt lose that much on the deal, but they worked rather well for drums, guitr cabs and vocals, all in live situations( i havent recorded with them) i cant tell if they are better or worse than sm 57's or 58's but to me they are on par .
4 toms mics and one kick( i use the kick on the floor tom and an akg d112 on the kick) 5 mics for 99.00 and a case as well.

cheap ecm8000's work well for over heads. 35.00 each

total 170.00 for 7 mics.

Hehe...

At the moment I'm using 4 AKG C418's, 2 Behringer ECM 8000's, 2 SM57's and a D112.

But the C418 isn't suited that well for use on a snare. I'd stick to using the mighty SM57 for that.

If you got a spare moment, goto : http://www.studiospares.com

For a mixer I'd suggest you have a look at the Yamaha MG12/4.
It gives you 4 outs, enough for kick, snare & 2 oheads. If you really want more you can use inserts to get another 4 tracks out of it for a total of 8 mics. Of course you'll need a soundcard that can handle that many outputs
