Tascam CC-222

Hoping some other owners of the Tascam CC-222 or an Audio Tech can help me. My problem exists when recording from vinyl record to CD. The input control knob that adjusts the recording levels seems to be very sensitive. I can only turn the input control knob up two line makings (about the 9 o’clock position) before the record level pegs over into the red.
That seems to have very little play in movement when the input control can be turned all the way to the right at the 5 o’clock position. I’ve tried two turntables: “VINTAGE" by ESOTERIC SOUND with an Audio-Technica AT316EP cartridge and a Technics SL-L2 with an Audio-Technica AT4030LC cartridge. Bottom line is this just the nature of the Tascam CC-222 when using a turntable plugged into the RIAA phono input jacks on the back or is something wrong. Any help is greatly appreciated.
