Phantom power

Is it okay to run a dynamic mic [ SM57 ] through a phantom powered input? [ if you have no choice? ]

It's usually no big deal. I've never blow up any mics with phantom power and I break all the rules.

Never had a problem with it in our live set up. Almost all our live mics are '57's and the mixer has phantom power, never been a problem ('cept we can't mix it for sh*t).

Most units have an on/off switch for the phantom power. If your gear does, then just don't turn it on -- no problema.

The only thing that's really going to roast is a ribbon mic. And now, many of them have some sort of protection against it.

Most any mic (or almost anything at all for that matter) that will freak under phantom power will make a big deal out of it in the manual (or even on the unit in many cases).

For a collection of "standard" mics - 57's, 58's, D112's, 421's, etc., it's nothing to worry about.
