It's basically just a rhythm guide.
Get a metronome sound going on your drum machine or your metronome.Adjust the tempo to the song you're going to record. Now record the metronome sound (click, click) on one of your free tracks. Record it for several measures longer than the song will be. This will be your tempo guide for your basic rhythm tracks.After you've got your rhythm section down you can record over the click track if you need to.
Or you can just use a programmed drum or bass arrangement for your click track.
