Problem with AKG D3800 stage mic
This is probably a lost cause. I bought a used AKG D3800 some time back to use on stage. Worked fine for a couple years. Then one day during a mic check it sounded different - very boxy and the freq range was like a telephone conversation. I switched to a 58. Next few times the AKG sounded fine but now it's a permanent condition. I've opened it up just to see what I could see and didn't see an obvious problem. Any ideas? Whaddya figure it would cost to repair?

Eddie,
First, check resistance of the coil. Also, open the grill and check if capsule looks OK. Watch for deteriorated foam and its loose particles. Check if fabric, which forms an acoustical resistance is not loose, and also, not clogged with dust. Last edited by Marik; 02-04-2004 at 14:51.. |

I had the same problem with a D3900 a few years ago. I had posted the problem on a newsgroup and was lucky that an AKG rep saw it and contacted me. Below is his email response. Possibly if he's still there you could drop him an email an see if they'll do anything for you. The D3900 I have was just out of warranty at the time, but they did good by me to fix it for zip. I did a search on the newsgroups and there have been a few problems like this posted.
Date: 98-08-03 09:28:40 EDT From: tstotler@harman.com (Stotler, Tom) To: arcaxis Hello, It sounds like from your news posting that you have a defective capsule. AKG recalled some D3900's and you may have one of the defective units. If so, I will personally see that you get it repaired at N/C other than shipping. Please call me at 615/360-0442 and I will tell you how to find out if it is one of these defective microphones. Best regards, AKG Acoustics, U.S. Tom Stotler |
